Both longboard and shortboard surfing is excellent off the beaches of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, and up the coast as well. The water is tropically warm all year, so you don’t need a wetsuit. Local surf shop experts provide quality instruction, surfing trips, as well as surfboard rentals, sales, and repairs.

Top spots:

• Just inside the mouth of Zihuatanejo Bay, the waves can be just right off the rocky point of Las Gatas beach,
  
  
• Totally inside Zihuatanejo Bay, Playa Madera has good surf and is just short walk from Zihuatanejo’s town center.
  
  
• Playa Escolleras, is at the east end of Ixtapa’s main beach, Playa el Palmar, and near the jetty of Marina Ixtapa. It attracts surfers, boogie boarders, swimmers and body surfers
  
  
• Up the coast beyond Ixtapa: Playa Linda (just 15 minutes from Ixtapa).
  
  
• Troncones, with three miles of beach, a half-hour up the coast.
  
  
• La Saladita, known as “a mellow longboard heaven.
